Under the fresh and rejuvenated leadership of Yousuf Rahman (Babu) as President and Syed Ahsan Habib (Rana) as Gen. Secretary, along with a host of competent members in the Executive Council backed up by a team of highly experienced Gregorians as Advisors, TGS portrays an image of youth and experience. It has already shown adequate signs of “giving

back to the Alma Mater” theme through its plans for implementation of multiple projects. The first project that TGS has sponsored is the GELC’s (Gregorian English Language Club) Annual English Carnival of 2022, an event that draws a few thousand students from various schools and colleges of the country. In May of 2022, upon the return of Grn. Yousuf Rahman from USA, one of the key founders of the TGA, several members of the alumni, including Bro. Leo Periera c.s.c., the then Principal of SGHS&C (St. Gregory’s High School and College), requested him to re-organize TGA in such manner so that it would work under a legal standing in the country. He was also requested to use his best effort to unite the alumni under one umbrella. In a conciliatory gesture, Yousuf Rahman approached the existing Secretary of TGA and a few others to come together under one unit to crystallize the Alumni and strengthen it. Regrettably, the lack of response left many not only puzzled but also disheartened.

More than three decades ago, an Alumni of significant reputation and respect was envisioned and created to represent the former students of St. Gregory’s High School. It started with a group of a few highly spirited Gregorians who felt that the need to form a “band of brothers” amongst fellow Gregorians was the call of the hour.
What started were a few percolated plans that eventually produced the 1981 Reunion attended by more than a thousand. As one of the founder members of that Reunion and, subsequently the first General Secretary of the Gregorian Alumni created under the banner of The Gregorian Association in 1985, I take immense pride to serve the Alumni once again as its President.
The spirit that we all experienced in the 1980s was overwhelmingly vibrant. Under the leadership of late Grn. Shamsul Azam (batch of 1956), the Alumni was headed in the right direction. Over time, that spirit seemed to dwindle and it did not take long enough for it to get derailed. The engine that provided the steam lost its energy and its purpose. It fell into an abyss as more and more Gregorians got detached from the organization. In addition, the lack of connection between the former students and their Alma Mater had become obvious.
Thankfully, the Gregorian spirit, although subdued for a while, was still alive. The Alumni body had to be reorganized and legitimized. The Gregorian Association has now been re-structured as a legal entity under the Society Act as The Gregorian Society (TGS). It is the only legal Alumni entity that represents St. Gregory’s High School and College.
As the Captain of this ship, my pledge to all Gregorians, regardless of your location, age, political and religious belief, is that you are welcome to be a part of TGS. It is your Alumni and all of you have equal share and say in it.
While re-structuring the Alumni, we have followed a process and the core principle of TGS is to ensure and establish a process oriented Organization that will navigate and run the ship safely even in the roughest of seas.
Membership enrollment has started and I encourage all of you, specially the young Gregorians, to join and not only be just a part of TGS, but also to experience an extraordinary journey that we have embarked upon. I am particularly keen on interacting with our younger brothers. We have a lot to learn from each other. I am confident that every single one of you has something to offer that will make TGS stronger and purposeful over time based upon unity and strength.
TGS is a transparent body and all of you have access to the TGS team. The team is here to serve the cause of the Alumni and what it can do to give something meaningful back to our Alma Mater. This is the line of thought that I look forward to amongst all Gregorians.
Life is not a bed of roses. There are some that want to do things differently. My message to such individuals is a simple one. TGS is available to hear you and I assure you, your opinions will be heard, discussed and decisions will be arrived at through a consensus. TGS has been made functional through a system. It is not based on the whims of any individual. As President, my request to all Gregorians is to be loyal to TGS and not to any individual of your liking. Your loyalty to the Organization is what matters the most.
Our extraordinary Advisory Council consists of extraordinary individuals who have dedicated their professional careers to the betterment of our Society. TGS is fortunate to have them guide the ship. I wish to take this opportunity to express my sincerest appreciation and gratitude to all of them.
To our team in the Executive Council, all I have to say is this; you have taken the responsibility to stabilize the ship. Focus not on the position you hold, rather focus on what you are about to accomplish through your service. Challenge yourself in what you do, so you become better as each day passes by.
I see an incredible opportunity not only for we Gregorians, but also for the School, its Faculty and Students alike to make an impact through TGS that will surely benefit all the players. Those that are not aware, TGS has been having positive discussions with the school administration for planning and implementation of certain programs both, in the Academic and Co-Curricular fields, which all of us know that such programs will go a long way to improve SGHS&C and make it the top school it once was.
St. Gregory’s High School has, for more than a century, been the beacon of light for all to follow. This beacon needs to shine again in its luminous form. It will happen when all of you believe in what TGS stands for- A system oriented Organization based upon transparency, accountability, unity and strength.
Let’s come forward in true Gregorian spirit, and bring the Gregorian pride that we all claim to have to the forefront. Action speaks louder than words. Let us hit the road with all engines running.
